Normal Map Color Space...

Does SM2 do any sort of automatic color space adjustment when you return from editing a normal map in an external editor?

So basically something like NVIDIA's normal map filter "Normalize only" alternative conversion option.

    No it doesn't. it is assumed that if normals are edited externally that that editor maintains the normalization of the vectors.
