Using Paint.Net as the External Editor

I would like to use Paint.Net as the external editor for some operations as it opens much faster than PhotoShop. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do so. Each time I try, I get the following message in Paint.Net: "The image type is not recognized and cannot be opened". I've tried several formats including PNG (8 bit RGB), PNG (8 bit RGBA), and BMP (8 bit RGB). The external editor feature works fine if PhotoShop is the external editor.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • In ShaderMap version 2.1 Settings->External Editors->Format there are only two formats allowed for external editing. They are PNG and TIF.

    According to the Paint.Net website:
The following file formats are supported: PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TGA, DDS, and TIFF. The native Paint.Net image type is PDN, which preserves the layer structure.
Perhaps Paint.Net does not support 16 bit versions of these images.
